CURRENT RESEARCH: Utah State University

The Berryman Institute for Wildlife Damage Management searches for solutions that benefit wildlife, reduce damage and nuisance problems caused by wildlife, and increase human understanding of wildlife and their behavior.  The research goals include resolving human-wildlife conflicts and alleviating wildlife damage problems by developing and testing innovative methods that are more effective, socially acceptable, and environmentally benign than current methods.

The Biotechnology Center with the newly improved Bioprocess Facility, promotes research and education, operates core resource service laboratories, and supports technology development and transfer.  The Bioprocess Facility combines equipment, instrumentation and highly motivated personnel to help academic and industrial clients find solutions to research and development problems.  The education and outreach programs provide professional training and technical support in biotechnology methods to researchers and educators from academic, government and industrial institutions throughout the state of Utah.

The Center for Atmospheric and Space Sciences provides a strong interdisciplinary focus for applied and theoretical research related to the basic processes present in the upper atmosphere.

The Center for Microbe Detection & Physiology develops and commercializes rapid detection methods for microbes.  The primary focus of the group is bacterial detection, but other targets are also investigated.  To date, four technologies are under development:- ImmunoFlow, ImmunoDNA, GlycoBind, and TissueTag.

The Center for Self-Organizing and Intelligent Systems focuses on autonomous vehicle and vehicle control systems.  For example, the center deployed the backup control system on NASA’s Mars Rover, has developed precision agriculture applications and is developing the next generation of autonomous armored vehicles for DOD.

The Ecology Center supports and coordinates ecological research and provides professional information and advice for decision-makers considering actions that affect the environment.

The Huntsman Environmental Research Center (HERC) recognizes the fundamental inter-dependence of the health of man and the health of the environment.  HERC's mission is to "engage in research in the key areas of recycling, degradability, improvement of air and water quality and conservation of trees."  The purpose of the Center is to solve environmental problems and to provide realistic and comprehensive research solutions for our environment.

The Institute for Antiviral Research is comprised of a recognized team of scientists, representing a spectrum of disciplines, who work together on research oriented toward the control of viral diseases.

The Institute for Land Reclamation conducts basic and applied research on issues related to land reclamation and ecosystem restoration.   Expertise associated with the Institute includes a wide variety of biological, ecological, physical and social expertise.

The Remote Sensor/Geographic Information Systems Laboratory (RS/GIS) is dedicated to the integration and presentation of geographic data for large tracts of land for the management of military installations, rangelands, forests and watersheds.  The Laboratory is also developing new terrestrial LIDAR systems designed to provide engineering grade data from airborne platforms.

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) excels in the fields of infrared (IR) instrumentation, sensor calibration, upper atmospheric measurement and modeling, space rated instrument/ payload development and data visualization and analysis.  SDL is ISO 9001 certified and internationally recognized with over 40 years experience in conducting space-based experiments.

The Utah Water Research Laboratory research is a form of scholarship that supports education and teaching within a university environment and service to external audiences. The research is directed at solving multimedia water-related problems of state, national, and international scopes.  The Lab's education and outreach programs provide professional training and technical support in biotechnology methods to researchers and educators from academic, government and industrial institutions throughout the state of Utah.

The Western Rural Development Center (WRDC) strengthens rural families, communities, and businesses by facilitating rural development research and outreach projects cooperatively with universities and communities throughout the West.  The WRDC is one of four USDA-sponsored regional centers in the country.  The Center works closely with university personnel, policy makers, elected officials and other community leaders, and citizens to identify key issues shaping the future of rural regions of the West and to organize projects that respond to those issues.  The Agriculture Experiment Station, Extension, the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and the College of Natural Resources also provide major support for the WRDC.
